Further Information

The Cereal Box Maths Challenge uses hand-made mastery learning folders to assist primary school students to master basic mental maths facts and skills. The creator of the project, primary teacher Nicola Carr-White, has just completed a research masters degree to align the Mastery Learning Folder process with research in cognitive psychology learning strategies including spaced retrieval, interleaving and elaboration (see The Learning Scientists).  Over the coming months these results will be incorporated into the original process.

A key challenge of the project is for students to persevere long enough to see results – this may take a couple of weeks. Once they experience progress they gain confidence and motivation to continue moving through increasingly advanced mental maths strategies, leading ultimately to the multiplication and division tables.

eg. 4 x 5 = 20, 5 x 4 = 20 AND 20 ÷ 4 = 5, 20 ÷ 5 = 4

Your child/student’s knowledge of mental maths facts and strategies in long-term memory will create a solid foundation for future mathematics learning.

Good luck!
