Further Information

The Cereal Box Maths Challenge uses hand-made mastery learning folders to assist primary school students to master basic mental maths facts and skills. The creator of the project, primary teacher Nicola Carr-White, is coming to the end of a research masters degree to align the process with evidence-informed learning science principles including deliberate practise, spaced retrieval, interleaving and elaboration (see The Learning Scientists).  The tool and process may also be used by classroom teachers to manage the practise of learning content being delivered through school.

A key challenge of the project is for students to persevere long enough to see results – this may take a couple of weeks. Once they see their progress they gain confidence and motivation to continue moving through increasingly advanced mental maths strategies, for example, the times tables. However, in addition to the multiplication facts, flashcards also include the related division facts.

For example:  4 x 5 = 20, 5 x 4 = 20 AND 20 ÷ 4 = 5, 20 ÷ 5 = 4

Your child/student’s knowledge of mental maths facts and strategies in long-term memory, will create a solid foundation for future mathematics learning.

Good luck!
